't know. that's straight from romney's communications director. >> right. you have to wonder, will this be an issue in tonight's debate. the jeremiah wright was a racially tinged scandal, led the president to give the speech in philadelphia, widely hailed, race is a comb mrx issue in the country always has been. we have yet to perfect and come to terms with yet. here we are again. we'll see if this has -- an impact. whose base it may rile up or not rile up. >> yeah, a lot of people are questioning whether or not it is news. this was a covered speech. but according to some even within the abc family, they said at the time, the campaign only put out prepared remarks in a prepared newspaper, posted a nine-minute edited version. abc and networks, was based on prepared remarks, not really what was said at the podium. definitely aster that i'm sure many outlets will be following. >> going to get some attention for sure. a lot going on in politics. that brings us to our facebook question of the day today. >> yep. we want to know what are you hoping to hear from the candidates in to

.z., right? >> no, absolutely not. and the thing is, is that mitt romney really seems to fungd well when he's coming from behind. so if there's anything that would give him any hope it's that when he seems to be coming from someone else has momentum, he can take that momentum, he seems to perform much better than has a front-runner. if he has any hope going in knowing expectations are extremely low for him, if he's able to take that and be aggressive and attack president obama, because let's face it the president is still extremely fuller inable. the only reason why romney isn't winning is because romney's been an absolute idiot the past two to three weeks. so if he can correct that by being aggressive, perhaps he can swing the momentum back to his favor. >> we like to use the word missteps. anna, let me give you the final word. president obama is vulnerable. he's been called a wonderful orator, that he mesmerizes audiences when he speaks, but he is vulnerable. where does romney have to strike him? >> look, i think romney needs to do what he did in the last two debates of the primary in flo

right now. there we are. that's where president obama and mitt romney will face off on stage. just one moderator, jim lehrer, of pbs. >> both candidates saying for months it will be crucial. >>> also, in this half hour, in this first half, a new showdown is heating up. a tree that almost killed, well, mcsteamy as you know him from "grey's anatomy." his wife was awe alone in the backyard. a tree fell on her from the next door neighbor's yard. a big legal battle brewing. >> and the lead singh from the smashing pumpkins. >>> first, we're going to get to the latest trouble for american airlines. a story we first brought you on "good morning america." another flight was forced to make an emergency landing last night. and abc's jim avila has been tracking all of the developments. jim, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, elizabeth. american pilots could be at the bargaining table as early as today, perhaps bringing to an end a string of delays that is crippling the reputation of the bankrupt airline which seems to be suffering one maintenance problem to another. this morning, the embattl

's right, george. the speech was covered five years ago. though, not part of the remarks when then-senator obama ad-libbed. conserves are calling it explosive. the obama campaign is calling it a desperate attempt by romney's allies to change the subject. speaking to the largely african-american hampton university ministers conference in june 2007, then-senator obama went off his prepared remarks. using a different speaking style than usual, obama charged new orleans, post-hurricane katrina, was supposed to get disaster from the stafford fund. a requirement waived for other disaster victims. >> when 9/11 happened in new york city, they waived the stafford act. said this is too serious a problem. we can't expect new york city to rebuild on its own. >> reporter: same with hurricane andrew in florida, he said. but -- >> what's happening down in new orleans? there's your dollars? where's your stafford act money? makes no sense. tells me the bullet hasn't been taken out. tells me that somehow, the people down in new orleans, they don't care about as much. >> reporter: beyond the accuracy

that doesn't come out right. in this case, i said something that's just completely wrong. >> reporter: mitt romney has campaign events this week in florida, but around those events he'll be joined by senator rob portman, the one that plays president obama in the debate camp practice sessions. mitt romney is getting ready for the next session, next debate, hoping his mum carries over next week. >> john harwood is cnbc's chief washington correspondent. thanks for being here. i don't know if it's possible to strip politics away from these new unemployment numbers, but if you can, explain, does the president get credit for these numbers coming down, and how real are they? >> well, the president gets credit or blame for whatever the economic conditions are on his watch. these are numbers that are better than they've been, but they're still not good numbers. 7.8% is a high unemployment rate. we've got an economy that's not growing very fast. but it's certainly good news for the president to be able to say that 7.8%, the rate when i took office, we're back down there again. but i think people make
